TOPIC::::Installing hard drive 3 &/or 4 on the INTEL PREMIERE motherboard
utilizing the on board IDE interfaces.
SOLUTION:The motherboard has both PCI and ISA IDE interfaces built in.
Use the PCI interface to connect the first two drives. Using
the fastest drives you have on this interface is the best choice.
Install the slower drives you may have on the ISA interface.
=============================================================================
CAUTION::******>>>>>>BEFORE TRYING TO ACCESS THE DRIVES<<<<********
pay special attention to the note below before proceeding further.
=============================================================================
Jumper the drives as below:
DRIVE C -> jumper as master.
DRIVE D -> jumper as slave.
DRIVE E -> jumper as single if no drive F, else as master.
DRIVE F -> jumper as slave.
All drives should be auto-detected by the system upon power up,
provided the initialization timeout is set correctly (try 10secs)
which delays the first command to the drives upon power up.
NOTE:::::The IDE translation field should be set for EACH DRIVE prior to
use - ESPECIALLY if the drive has already been formatted & used on
a different computer. The Standard CHS setting is the safest choice
for these drives which may, & probably do, contain Data.
Attempting to use AUTODETECT MODE in this field can lead to a
data trashing event and/or a failure, in the case of the C drive,
to boot.
A running computer with C drive obviously correctly set
allows access to the other drives which MAY NOT BE correctly set.
Here is where the data trashing event will likely occur.
The author's unfortunate experiences here, along with the
reformatting and restoring of lost data that followed, contributed
to the writing of this note.
CLOSING::I trust my experiences will assist others in setting up their
systems, and prevent the FAT table trashing I experienced.
Good Luck.
